Jerez de la Frontera in the Province of Andalucia
Located
in the region of Andalusia, Jerez de la Frontera is the largest city in the province in Cadiz with almost 200,000 inhabitants and the fifth largest in
Andalusia. There are also many horse breeding and cattle ranches within or surrounding the town, which has become the communications centre of the
province outdoing even Cadiz, the capital of the province.
The ‘Frontera’ part of its name refers to the towns location on the border between the Moorish and Christian regions of Spain during the Muslim occupation of Iberia when it was called Xerez.
The
town is the centre of the famous sherry wine production, which bears its name. Horse training is also a major feature of this southern Spanish town in
that the Royal Andalusian School of Equestrian Art is based here. This is a riding school comparable to the Spanish Riding School in Vienna where horses
are trained to do the ‘Spanish Walk’.
Visitors will also, presumably, wish to see the vineyards and sherry bodegas to sample the regions most favourite alcoholic drink and discover how it is made. As Jerez is also recognized as being the place where flamenco began, you will see many places where the dancing and singing is performed.
The Easter week celebrations are noted as being of ‘National tourist Interest’ and the horse fair in May is also an event not to be missed.
The Circuito Permanente de Jerezis is located just outside town and is the location of the annual Spanish Motorcycle Grand Prix at which many of the major Formula One teams perform off-season testing.
