Alarcon is a beautiful medieval town about an hour and a half drive from Madrid, spectacularly located on 200-foot high cliffs surrounded by an impossibly
narrow gooseneck of the Rio Jucar in central Spain’s La Mancha province.
Visitors to the town are presented with outstanding views in completely quiet and peaceful surroundings. With the walled village and its stone built
houses, the castle and churches it would be difficult for you to find a more tranquil village than Alarcon.
You only need to stroll around in the narrow, winding streets for a short while to appreciate its serenity, whilst the castle itself completely dominates
the town.
It has been converted recently into a parador (a luxury hotel often in castles, palaces, fortresses etc) with just 13 guest rooms, all of them in the tower.
In the main square is the church of San Juan Bautista, built in the16th century on top of an old Romanesque temple.
Some exceptional walks can be found beside the winding river Jucar. Eagles and other birds of prey are often spotted nesting in the rocky sides of the
gorge.
