Albarracin in the Province of Aragon
The
breathtaking beauty of the landscape from the top of the castle, which overlooks Albarracin in the Province of Aragon, is the thing that stays in the
minds of most of the town’s visitors.
Located high in the mountains in one of Spain’s national parks and just 28km from Teruel, the town itself overlooks the Guadalivar river and is distinguished by its steep and narrow cobbled streets which get steeper and narrower the further up the hill you climb revealing a fascinatingly different aspect of the town at every corner.
The mellow pink of the buildings, the beautiful square and the blue-domed cathedral all lend themselves to the beauty of the town and it’s easy to see why this picturesque little place earned the honour of an international award for historical preservation.
The
Sierra de Albarracin region has been inhabited since prehistoric times, as is evident by the many rock engravings at the nearby sites of Callejon del
Plou and Cueva del Navaza.
The castle, peering down on the walled town, is located here for one particular reason; Albarracin has a predominant strategic significance in Spanish history being at the confluence of three former kingdoms – Castillas, Aragon and Valencia.
Visitors can find a reasonable choice of good hotels in Albarracin but there is also the Parador in Teruel, which offers a little more comfort and is only around half an hours drive away with outstanding scenery along the way.
