Alcoy in the Province of Valencia
Alcoy, in the province of Valencia,
is a mainly industrial town covering 129.9km² situated in the interior lands of the Costa Blanca and as such is largely undiscovered by tourists.
Factories manufacturing matches along with others related to the textile, paper and food industries are all located in the town.
Due to the fact that five different rivers (Serpis, Uxola, Molinar, Bnisaido and Riquer) cross the town, it is full of impressive bridges and viaducts which give it a charm all of its own.
Occurring around St. George’s day in April, the biggest event of the year in the little town of Alcoy, is its fiesta, which re-enacts the battles between Moors and Christians with the participants in full historic costume.
The town itself (out of fiesta season) is also worth a visit as it is full of interesting places to see, such as the Plaza de Espana.
As cars can often crowd the city centre, the gardens of ‘la glorieta’ and the ‘parc de cantagallet’ offer a haven of peace and tranquillity. Just what’s needed after a hard day of taking in the sights. Then again, you can always rest for a while at one of the many small bars and cafes that line the streets of the ‘old town’.
