Regional information for Murcia

map of murcia The Autonomous Community of the Region of Murcia is located in the southeast of the country, between Andalucía and Valencian Community, on the Mediterranean coast. The city of Murcia is the capital of the community.

The Region of Murcia consisting of a single province is bordered by Andalucía; Castilla-La Mancha, Valencian Community and the Mediterranean Sea. The highest mountain is Revolcadores (2015m).

Murcia is characterized by its history of commerce and agriculture. Its original inhabitants, Iberian tribes, established commercial relations with Phoenicians and Greeks. Later, it became first a Carthaginean colony and then a Roman colony with Cartagena still reminding us of that fact. The Moors established modern agricultural production, which still today is an important economic factor, thanks to their advanced technologies.

University of MurciaOf major tourist interest is of course the Mediterranean coast, Costa Calida ("the warm coast"), with its beaches of fine sand. The salt-water lagoon Mar Menor and La Manga del Mar Menor offer great water sports opportunities. The inland is almost desert-like, and you can visit several towns that still preserve their medieval structures.

The city is an important seat of learning with its three Universities the main one being the University of Murcia with over 31,000 students.

Typical cooking includes stews, salads, roasted meat, rice and of course great seafood along the coast. Murcia also produces wine of very high quality.

Murcia is mainly a warm region which has made it very suitable for agriculture and it is a major producer of fruits, vegetables, and flowers for Spain and the rest of Europe and it is not uncommon to find Murcia's tomatoes and lettuce, and especially lemons and oranges, in European supermarkets. Excellent wineries have developed near the towns of Bullas, Yecla and Jumilla, as well as olive oil near Moratalla.

Language

The Spanish spoken in the region is quite different from other areas of Spain. Murciano (or Panocho) tends to eliminate many syllable-final consonants and to emphasize regional vocabulary. The language spoken here shares some traits with the one spoken in Almería, a neighboroughing province.
